The Inclusion of Students in Vulnerable Conditions in Ecuador

Abstract:

This research aimed to analyze and compare cognitive-affective and behavioral psychological skills from 1005 students who entered the Escuela Politécnica Nacional (EPN) leveling course in the first semester of the year 2019, made up by two population groups or segments formed by: 218 students belonging to vulnerable groups and 787 students belonging to non-vulnerable groups. The comparative calculations were performed using ANOVA statistical analysis. The results show that students belonging to vulnerable groups have a higher level of discouragement and disorganization, greater distraction in classes, greater distrust of their abilities, greater perception of job saturation and more disinterest compared to their colleagues who are not part of vulnerable groups. However, there were better perceptions in relation to being considered a good student, and in relation to their discipline and perfectionism. These results are part of inputs for a priority work policy and directed with these groups, verifying that motivational aspects and social skills are fundamental elements for student success.

Differences Between Vulnerable and Non-Vulnerable Students Regarding the Psychological Abilities and Self-Control Skills Within the Development of Learning

In research previously conducted at Escuela Politécnica Nacional, high percentages of reprobation and desertion were evident in the leveling course, proving that there is no homogeneous level in middle school. The objective of this research is to make a diagnosis to detect the training needs of the Bachelors and to submit a proposal for an integral intervention course for students entering the Escuela Politécnica Nacional. For this, a previous knowledge assessment instrument was developed, which includes 55 math questions and 25 language and communication questions. This instrument was applied to a sample of 1249 students who obtained a quota in the Escuela Politécnica Nacional for the period 2019-A (April-August). In addition, a data analysis was carried out to determine the main academic flaws and with this, we propose the contents of a course that allows to reduce the reproach rate.

Proposal of a Mathematics Pilot Program for Engineering Students from Vulnerable Groups of Escuela Politécnica Nacional

Abstract:

Since 2017, Secretaría Nacional de Educación Superior, Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación (SENESCYT), has included, among the new students entering the Leveling Course of Escuela Politécnica Nacional (EPN), those from Affirmative Action population segment. These students tend to show low academic performance and high dropping out rates. Mathematics, of considerable importance for engineering training, is the subject that shows the lowest indicator of academic performance during high school, for this reason, EPN in response to this problem, proposes a Mathematics Pilot Program for students of engineering from vulnerable groups. To this end, it was conducted a descriptive analysis of the information of students enrolled in the Leveling Course between the semesters 2017-A and 2018-A, and based on the criteria of the teachers of the Leveling Course, a diagnostic test was designed and applied to the new students of the 2018-B semester, this test evaluated only basic Mathematics…
